Most ceiling repairs are basically likely to be water damage and mold, 12 inches, or something like that falling through drywall (from attic) or plaster and related problems. Thankfully, particularly to fix offer a similar experience may it be drywall or plaster. Drywall offers more versatility with inexpensive materials and tools. Actual plaster repair involves a 3 coat method with specific materials and requirements a little bit more expertise or skill level.

Cracks in drywall usually appear on the joints or corners and may be as a result of 2 things, 1, poor original taping job and 2, framing movement or deterioration from the wood, and that is more inclined at fault, but cracks just turning up on top area is incredibly unusual. Cracks in drywall are more common around doors and windows. Make use of you have plaster then you could have cracks turning up anywhere that is common for older homes with plaster, it is the than me.

As long as the plaster just isn't falling away and it is still secure towards lath and framing, then you can just do it with general drywall taping procedure except 2 things, first, clean and prime with a good gripping primer, (most plaster is reasonably glossy) and secondly use 2 inch fiberglass mesh tape as an alternative to paper tape. Paper tape is fine on thin fine cracks, and also for the wider cracks use mesh tape. Remove any lose plaster before taping and fill flush that has a fast set 20 or 40 minute mud. Should the cracks are real fine, rub some latex caulk included and wipe smooth using a damp clean rag, it may have the desired effect, when they reopen, you'll should tape them.

Holes in every ceiling from breakage or water damage and mold requires removing the damaged area, plaster or drywall, for the joists inside a square shape and investing a part of drywall last it's place and taping and finishing it with 2 - 3 coats coming from all purpose drywall mud and even topping. Always apply tape or mesh with purpose mud to get maximum adhesion. Topping is wonderful for 2nd and 3rd coats the way it trowels real smooth which is simpler to sand.

Some minor lose plaster, whether walls or ceiling, is usually injected having a newer type glue that re-bonds the plaster towards the lath, certainly it has to be pushed directly into place and supported though it may be starting. If the ceiling has got to much damage, cracks, and lose material, and is particularly to far gone, or it will create a number of work making it stand out, then your other option to consider is to over sheet the ceiling with 3/8 inch drywall. After this you modify the surface to work alongside.

Yet another option and it is much more work, however i would only recommend it as soon as the previous methods are not working, also it can become a mess, which is always to remove every one of the old plaster and lath and install brand new 1/2 inch drywall. This tends to allow you to repair any ceiling joists which may be the reason for the plaster failure but will also supply you with a new, flat work surface to cooperate with no more difficulty with that ceiling again.
